Prof. Dr. iur. Dres. h.c. Peter Schlechtriem, M.C.L.
In 1933, Prof. Peter Schlechtriem was born in Jena, Germany. After his studies in Hamburg, he earned in 1964 a doctorate of the University of Freiburg i.Br. Until then, he was a research assistant to Prof. Ernst von Caemmerer. In 1964/1965 he received a Master of Comparative Law at the University of Chicago. In 1970, he obtained his postdoctoral qualification ("Habilitation") at the University of Freiburg i.Br., with Prof. Ernst von Caemmerer being his supervisor. Between 1971 and 1977, Prof. Schlechtriem was a full professor and head of the Institute for Foreign and International Private Law at the University of Heidelberg, Germany.

In 1977, Prof. Schlechtriem was offered a chair at the University of Freiburg and as the successor to Prof. Ernst von Caemmerer at the University of Freiburg, he was Co-director at the Institute for Foreign and International Private Law until he retired in 2000. Furthermore, the University of Basel (Switzerland) and the University of Tartu (Estonia) confered a honorary doctor on him. As far as the United Nations Convention for the International Sale of Goods (CISG) is concerned, Prof. Schlechtriem was a member of the German delegation as a representative for science at the conference in Vienna.

He was the co-editor (with Prof. Ingeborg Schwenzer) and one of the contributors of the leading commentary on the CISG. Until recently, he participated, among other things in the UNIDROIT Working Group for the UNIDROIT Principles Part II and was a member and first chair of the CISG-Advisory Council. He was one of the world's most famous specialists on the CISG. On 23 April 2007, Peter Schlechtriem died in Freiburg at the age of 74.
